Maritime Day

This week, we are reminded that the sea is not just a natural element – it is also a space for cooperation, education, discovery, and shared responsibility. Celebrated on 20th May, the European Maritime Day is a time to reflect on how much we owe to our seas and oceans – not only understood as reservoirs of resources, but also of inspiration and hope for a more sustainable future.

Moreover, on 18th May we also observed the International Day for Women in Maritime. This is a perfect opportunity to recognise women’s contributions to research, marine conservation, ocean engineering, shipping, or maritime policies. Their voices and perspectives are crucial to making the future of the oceans diverse, innovative and equitable.

Today more than ever, we need courage and imagination – qualities that so many female researchers, engineers, sailors and activists bring to the maritime world each and every day.
